JUDO: Sparring Series – Clinch to Side Control Trip Throw

We train in various martial arts, including judo. We really didn’t see a reason not to do a Judo video. Our main focus is still Krav Maga You and your opponent are locked in a clinch. In order to get him into side control you may do the following. ( tai otoshi) Steps: 1. While in the clinch, grasp the outside of the opponents bicep, and with your opposite hand firmly grip the back of his neck. 2. Drop your center of balance, while simultaneously twisting your body and tripping him, by sticking out your opposite leg and landing on your other knee. 3. Rapidly pull the attacker over your leg from both his arm and neck in a powerful vertical motion. Make sure that you keep him close to your body in order to easily regain control over him after the throw. 4. After he lands on the ground, continue to hold his arm , and close the distance between your bodies. 5. From Side Control you may put him in an arm bar, or punch him in an MMA match. 6. Here is an extract from a conversation I had with one of my colleagues about why thje girl in the clip put the arm-bar on the guy.

Alan:
Be interested in your opinion of this technique versus getting a knee/shin into the attackers hips to get a bit of distance and then striking to the face with the other foot. Intuitively I’d tend towards the 2nd technique. That seems to offer the best opportunity of getting back up on you feet in the shortest time. Happy to stand corrected though.

McGill:
Hi Alan, that technique is the best way of getting up but for female self defence the priorities can be different. Women are attacked one-to-one more often that guys so the pressing need to get up is not as great as it would be in a mob fight involving guys. And her’s the rub, check out the size difference between Theresa and Leo: if she kicks him in the face he’s probably going to get over it and when she gets up she’s going to have to outfight him or outrun him. Wouldn’t bet on either to be honest mate so it’s better if she can break something using a leveraged technique like this, then she can get up more safely. Make sense?

Alan:
Perfect sense. I like the fact that you’ve considered the context. As most sexual assaults are carried out in fringe areas (i.e. by definition where there’s no one nearby) then I suppose the girl can take time to finish the job on the ground.

Nashville Krav Maga Major Announcement

We have exciting news to share with all of our Krav Maga members! Following months of time, energy, and effort, we are very excited to finally announce the opening of our new retail center! We take possession of a new, standalone facility on Friday, June 1.
On Monday June 4th we will celebrate our first class in our new center located at 4200 Kenilwood Dr. Nashville, TN 37204.

The location is off I-65 between Armory exit and Harding Place Exit.

We very much apologize for all the inconveniences you have endured during these months. We also appreciate your continued patience in this month of May while we transition to our new permanent home. All of us at Nashville very much appreciate our members who have stuck with us during these challenging times and shown strong patience with tight training spaces, poor parking and may other challenges.

Unfortunately, due to forces beyond our control – Effective Thursday May 3rd we will NO LONGER have classes at our FIT Nashville location. We will conduct classes for the month of May at the Cool Springs YMCA at 121 Seaboard Ln. Class times will be Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday starting at 6:30 pm. At 7:30 pm on those days, we will hold heavy bag classes as well. This will give an introduction to a padded training floor for the Nashville participants and a heavy bag class for the Cool Springs members.

In addition to these training days, beginning on Saturday, May 12 we will hold classes from 9-10:30 am in a different park each week throughout Nashville. This is a pilot program that will encompass all we do at Nashville Krav Maga – fitness, self-defense, and real world, scenario based training. Self-defense doesn’t occur in a gym and neither should our training be limited to the gym! The site for next week’s training will be posted/announced on our Facebook page prior to that Saturday’s event. This is a great opportunity to test your skills and expose your friends and family to what real self defense looks like. This is a pilot program for future training events – if it works, look for more of this in the future after we enter our new space. You have an opportunity to guide the direction of the training!

In addition to the new facility, we are building on a foundation begun by Patrick Terry when he brought Krav Maga to the Nashville area several years ago. The new organization will use that foundation, add local management, a new training space, and your input to create the premier self defense training in the area!

Last, but not least, a big THANKS is due to all of our members. Without you there is no Nashville Krav Maga. Many more changes are coming to our school. Thank you again for your patience in this transitional time and for your continued support.
